MLB umpire Brock Ballou was violently assaulted and robbed in Center City Philadelphia on the evening of April 9 while in town to work a Phillies series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The veteran ump got a harsh reality check on life in the City of Brotherly Love when a suspect approached him from behind in broad daylight.

According to Philadelphia police, a suspect approached Ballou from behind in the 1600 block of Walnut Street while the umpire was checking directions on his phone. The suspect snatched the device and fled, prompting Ballou to give chase.

The confrontation quickly escalated into a physical altercation near 16th and Walnut, where surveillance video captured the suspect punching Ballou multiple times in the head.

During the struggle, both men ended up on the ground. Ballou struck his head on the pavement, sustaining injury, as the suspect continued the assault with repeated violent punches, police Capt. Jason Smith told CBS News Philadelphia.

“The suspect approached the male and snatched his cellphone out of his hands,” Smith said. “The victim went chasing after the male, at which time they got involved in a physical altercation at 16th and Walnut.”

“They ended up on the ground, at which time the victim struck his head, causing injury,” he added. “The male continued his assault, violently punching him.”

Ballou Punched Repeatedly in Head During Street Robbery, Returns to Field Next Night

Believe it or not, Ballou, who has been an MLB umpire since 2022, wasn’t the first person to fall victim to the attacker that day. Another victim was targeted by the same suspect within about 30 minutes. Earlier that evening, the individual allegedly stole items from a 7-Eleven on Chestnut Street and punched an employee who confronted him.

Despite the attack, Ballou’s injuries were not considered serious. And he’s a pretty tough fella, as well. He returned to the field the following night to umpire the Phillies game.

Police have released surveillance images of the suspect, described as a teenager wearing a black hat, black pants, and a light blue hoodie, and continue to investigate the string of robberies and assaults in the area.

Ballou’s toughness is commendable — he was back umpiring at first base the very next night, and returned behind the plate two days after the attack.

The incident serves as a stark reminder that even MLB officials aren’t immune to street crime in Philadelphia. Police continue to search for the suspect. We’ll keep readers updated as events warrant.
