The Boston Red Sox offseason is nearly drawing to a close with spring training right around the corner, but it does appear the club might not be done adding to its major league roster. Currently seeking more depth, Boston is reportedly in the mix for a key veteran in MLB free agency.

According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, the Red Sox “have had some conversations” with free agent utility man Dylan Moore. At this time, however, it’s unclear if Boston will be the team that lands him.

  • Dylan Moore stats (ESPN): .201/.267/.374, .642 OPS, 11 home runs, 14 stolen bases in 219 at-bats

Moore, 33, spent time with both the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers this past season. The right-handed hitter struggled in Seattle, posting a .193/.263/.359 slash line with a .622 OPS. In August, he was designated for assignment by Seattle and released. He soon signed a minor league contract with Texas, playing 18 games for the club. In 27 at-bats, he recorded a .259/.300/.481 line with a .781 OPS.

The 6-foot utility man has never been a particularly productive hitter, but he has demonstrated an ability to get on base fairly consistently. While Moore managed only a .200 batting average across 1,481 plate appearances from 2021-25, his OBP was 100 points higher thanks to 163 walks.

The real key for Boston is certainly Moore’s versatility. This past season with the Rangers and Mariners, he made 18 appearances at first base, 39 at second base, 16 at third base, six at shortstop and 31 in right field. He was also used 34 times as a pinch hitter and nine times as a pinch runner.

Boston could use him as infield depth behind Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell and William Contreras next season. Given how important lineup versatility has proven in recent years for contenders, any club that lands Moore for the 2026 season would be gaining a bit of a Swiss Army knife for a manager.
