A new rumor about free agent pitcher Michael King may make him a top target for the New York Mets in MLB free agency.
This is going to be another pivotal offseason for the Mets following a disastrous finish to the 2025 season. They have a lengthy to-do list this winter. It includes, hopefully, re-signing All-Stars Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso, rebuilding their bullpen, and deciding on a long-term fix for centerfield.
However, a top priority from the start is trying to find and impact veteran starter to lead their rotation in 2026. Over the last month, the club has been linked to blockbuster trades for Tarik Skubal and Freddy Peralta. However, the two talented aces don’t look likely to be moved before the start of the season. Leaving free agency as the best option for the Mets to improve their rotation.
With Dylan Cease now off the board, there have been rumors that Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez may be New York’s top target. However, a new report makes it seem like San Diego Padres pitcher Michael King might be a better fit for the Mets.
Michael King is willing to take a Mets-friendly deal

“Right-hander Michael King has widespread interest because of his frontline potential with a willingness to sign for a shorter term than the top starters,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports.
If you were a Mets fan somehow under a rock for the last couple of years, President David Stearns is a big fan of short-term deals. Despite working for the richest owner in the sport, he is allergic to long-term contracts. It is why Pete Alonso could leave in free agency, and Framber Valdez is unlikely to be playing in Queens next season.
King is right in the prime of his career, was a front-line starter for the Pads, and showed during his five seasons with the New York Yankees, he can handle the Gotham spotlight. If he is willing to take a two or three-year contract, he would seem like the perfect option for the Mets executive.
