A recent rumor opens the door for the New York Mets to address a pair of needs with a couple of talented youngsters from the Boston Red Sox.

This has been a frustrating couple of weeks for Mets fans. To begin the month, they were hit with a major shot to the gut when they lost not one, but two members of their core when Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso accepted huge contract offers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles, respectively.

The pair of departures were sandwiched between trades that also moved homegrown veterans Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil. Clear messages are being sent by the front office after their September collapse. The locker room needs a major facelift, the team only wants short-term deals for players over 30, and they would like the roster to get younger.

However, while the club has made a couple of additions, such as signing Jorge Polanco, they still need to make more impactful additions if they want to fill the void left by the players they moved on from and address offseason needs. That is why the Red Sox would be a perfect trade partner. Especially after a recent rumor.

According to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, Boston has “quietly shopped” talented young pitcher Brayan Bello. There have also been Jarren Duran trade rumors swirling for weeks, and some reports linking him to New York. Both are young and would help fill needs with players who have proven themselves at the big league level.

So, what would a trade look like, and do the NY Mets have assets the Red Sox want to give up a pair of high-potential players? Boston is reportedly looking for right-handed power in the infield and starting pitching. New York could offer some interesting trade packages that include big and minor league talent.

In a potential deal for Bello and Duran, the Mets would likely offer Mark Vientos, but could also throw in Brett Baty. The pair of young infielders has the potential to hit well over 20 homers (Over 30 for Vientos) next season. However, the Mets could also include star prospect Jett Williams in a deal. He can play second and shortstop, as well as the outfield, and is a top 30 prospect in MLB who could make the big league roster on opening day.

As for pitching, the NY Mets have two options that should appeal to the Red Sox. The first is Kodai Senga. While he has dealt with injury issues the last two seasons, when healthy, he has shown ace-level talent and earned All-Star honors in his debut season two years ago. Talented prospect Brandon Sproat could also be added to a trade package, and is one of the best pitching prospects in a system that is among the best in the league.

Duran is a one-time All-Star who is under team contract for three more seasons. Bello was one of the Red Sox’s top prospects a few years ago and took a nice development step forward in 2025. The team was so high on him that they gave him a six-year extension in 2024.
