The New York Mets solidified their bullpen Wednesday, trading for right-handed reliever Tyler Rogers and his 1.80 ERA from the San Francisco Giants. But it came at a cost.

The Mets sent right-handed pitcher Jose Butto and two prospects to the Giants: right-handed pitcher Blade Tidwell (New York’s No. 10 prospect) and outfielder Drew Gilbert (New York’s No. 12 prospect).

ESPN’s Jeff Passan called it a “hefty price” to pay for Rogers, who doesn’t blow anyone away with his 83.3 mph sinker — which ranks at the bottom in baseball. But opponents are hitting just .188 against his slider.

“Tyler Rogers is really good. Submariner who doesn’t throw hard but just gets outs. Has a 1.80 ERA this season and 2.74 over the last five years. Consistent relievers are hard to come by, and Rogers, who’s a free agent after this season, has been a model of consistency,” Passan posted on X.

The Mets already had one of the better bullpens in baseball before acquiring Rogers, ranking fifth in the National League in ERA (3.82) and seventh in batting average allowed (.239). New York also traded for left-handed reliever Gregory Soto from the Baltimore Orioles earlier this week.

In four seasons in Queens, Butto posted a 3.45 ERA in 74 games (15 starts) while striking out 163 in 167 innings. Gilbert has a .785 OPS and 12 home runs in 81 Triple-A games this season, while Tidwell has a 4.10 ERA in 17 Triple-A games (14 starts). He also appeared in four games for the Mets this season and posted a 9.00 ERA.

Rogers’ twin brother, Taylor, also was traded Wednesday when the Cincinnati Reds sent him to the Pittsburgh Pirates as part of a package for third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes.
