The New York Mets filled their center field void by trading for a former All-Star, but it wasn’t Luis Robert Jr. They ended up acquiring Cedric Mullins from the Baltimore Orioles.

According to The Athletic’s Will Sammon, the Mets parted with three pitching prospects: Anthony Nunez (New York’s No. 14 prospect), Raimon Gomez (New York’s No. 30 prospect), and Chandler Marsh.

Mullins, a 2021 All-Star, spent his entire eight-year career in Baltimore until today. He’s slashing .229/.305/.433 with a 105 OPS+, 15 home runs and 19 doubles.

The acquisition addresses a glaring need. Center field was a black hole offensively for the Mets, ranking 27th in OPS (.602), 28th in batting average (.214) and tied for last in home runs (four).

The Mets were also interested in Robert, the Chicago White Sox center fielder who has struggled since his 2023 All-Star campaign. Robert is hitting just .213/.300/.353 with an 82 OPS+ and 11 home runs, though he still plays elite defense, batted .353 in July and crushes lefties with a .990 OPS.

However, the White Sox set an absurdly high price on Robert and claim they’re willing to pick up his $20 million option for 2026 despite his underwhelming performance. With the Mets and Philadelphia Phillies (Harrison Bader) upgrading center field elsewhere, Chicago may have priced themselves out of potential deals.
