The offseason is officially underway, and that means a boatload of MLB rumors are starting to swirl around the sport, especially with the 2025 general manager meetings going down right now in Las Vegas. Without a doubt, MLB free agency is sure to be a major topic this week in Sin City, but there will definitely be trade talks among rival executives to lay the groundwork for deals that will come in the next few weeks and months.
With that in mind, let’s look at some of the latest MLB rumors coming out of the GM meetings.
Freddy Peralta trade rumors

Freddy Peralta’s name has appeared in a lot of trade chatter in recent days, and it is understandable why. He is just 29 years old, is a two-time All-Star, and is only making $8 million in the final year of his contract in 2026. However, according to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, that is a major reason why the Milwaukee Brewers may hold on to him.
After having the best record in MLB last season, Milwaukee is not far off from being a serious World Series contender. Moving their ace now would be a bold move, even if they know they won’t be able to keep him in free agency. The insiders suggest Milwaukee could do exactly what they did with Willy Adames a year ago. Keep their star, let him walk in free agency, and get a draft pick next year.
Sandy Alcantara trade rumors

With so much trade talk about Tarik Skubal, Freddy Peralta, and even Paul Skenes in recent days, rumors about the Miami Marlins moving ace Sandy Alcantara have become an afterthought. However, of the big-name pitchers that could be moved, The Athletic suggests Alcantara is the likeliest.
However, something of note is a separate report this week that Miami has suggested at this week’s meetings that they are open to spending this winter to improve the roster. If they are thinking of a run at a Wild Card spot in 2026, it could mean Alcantara will soon come off the trade block, and they will instead focus on moving Edward Cabrera.
Tarik Skubal trade rumors

A Skubal trade has been one of the biggest stories in MLB over the last few weeks. A trade makes a lot of sense for the Detroit Tigers because he is a lock to land a record-breaking deal they can’t afford when he hits free agency next year. But evidence continues to emerge that a trade is not happening this winter.
Firstly, because various reports suggest Detroit can get just as good an offer at the trade deadline as they could now. However, The Athletic’s insiders offered up some other interesting points on Wednesday.
First, trading him now would send a bad message to a fan base that has started to finally come back consistently over the last two years. The AL Central is still wide open, and once you get in the tournament, anything can happen. But lastly, the outlet suggests that when they lose Skubal in free agency, “The team would try, as best it could, to replace him” next winter.
Cost for Mets to keep Edwin Diaz

While New York Mets fans are worried they could lose homegrown All-Star Pete Alonso in MLB free agency, stud closer Edwin Diaz is also on the open market this winter. According to The Athletic, the three-time All-Star is looking for a contract that “is essentially the same one the Mets gave him the last time.” A record-breaking five-year pact worth $102 million.
The outlet suggested New York’s chances of keeping Diaz are extremely high because rival clubs are likely to balk at his asking price and the draft compensation in a deal. But also, owner Steve Cohen and his wife, Alex, are allegedly huge fans of the closer.
