Kevin McGonigle is heading to the big leagues. McGonigle has made the Opening Day roster for the 2026 MLB season, the Detroit Tigers announced. The 21-year-old shortstop is the Tigers’ top prospect and figures to be one of the favorites to win the AL Rookie of the Year award this season.

McGonigle has quickly risen through the ranks after the Tigers selected him with the 37th pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. In 2025, McGonigle was promoted to the Erie SeaWolves, the Double-A affiliate of the Tigers. After hitting 12 home runs and driving in 41 runs over 46 games, the shortstop earned the opportunity to fight for an Opening Day roster spot this season.

In Spring Training, McGonigle hit two home runs while driving in six runs over 44 at bats. The 21-year-old shortstop had a .250 batting average and .888 on base percentage. McGonigle gave Detroit a tough decision and instead of sending him back to minor leagues, he will stick around as the starting shortstop.

Like other highly regarded MLB prospects, McGonigle will skip Triple-A and go straight to MLB. The Tigers believe in McGonigle’s offensive abilities and his fielding was much improved during Spring Training. Now, he will slide next to third baseman Colt Keith on the left side of the infield.

McGongile is the consensus No. 2 prospect in baseball and the hype is very high in Detroit. It might take time for McGonigle to fully integrate into MLB, but it shouldn’t scare anyone away from his long-term potential in the big leagues.

McGonigle is ready to make his long-anticipated debut in MLB, and the Tigers believe he can live up to the expectations. If so, Detroit’s biggest addition of the 2025 MLB offseason could be from one of the best prospects in baseball.
