Charlie Sheen looked like a real deal pitcher in the first film of the Major League series. During a new interview, he revealed the secret ingredient to throwing pitches like a big leaguer, and it perfectly adds to the famous actor’s legend.
While the discourse about the greatest sports movies of all time is divisive and has many different opinions, the 1989 classic Major League is on every top 10 list about the topic. The beloved comedy film gave a hilarious inside look at an MLB locker room, and the journey to turn a team into a bunch of losers into winners.
But beyond the funny moments and storytelling, it felt legitimate because of the athletic gifts of stars like Wesley Snipes and Charlie Sheen. The latter, especially, because when playing fireballer Ricky Vaughn, his pitches had some real heat on them.
Well, during a recent chat on All the Smoke, Sheen explained how he was able to get some chemical help to throw like a big leaguer in the film.
Charlie Sheen was a pitcher in high school before becoming an actor
Firstly, Sheen admitted that he had a solid resume as a pitcher because he was on the staff for his high school team just four years before landing his role in Major League. It was a key reason why he won the part, and he told director David S. Ward that he could probably top out somewhere in the mid-80s on his fastball.
However, when the time came to start gearing up for filming, he was only throwing just over 75 MPH. So, to try and make his stuff look as legitimate as possible, Sheen says his trainer at the time had a steroid connection and was able to get him some. After taking “a bunch of steroids,” he says his fastball picked up 10 MPH in speed.
In total, Sheen says that he was on steroids for six weeks to keep his heater up to par for his scenes. “I was a little nutty during the [filming], you know,” the long-time actor admitted.
Charlie Sheen has an extensive history of drug use over the last 30 years, so it won’t come as much of a surprise that he used PEDs while filming the movie. But it nevertheless adds another hilarious chapter to his wild life.
