A new report about a pair of impact players linked to the New York Yankees is bad news for the pinstripes.
We are just a few weeks away from pitchers and catchers arriving at camps, and the Yankees have underwhelmed their fanbase. This time of year, the club is known for making big moves to maintain its high standard. But thus far the most notable thing that has happened is outfielder Trent Grisham accepting the teams $22 million qualifying offer.
It doesn’t help matters that the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles have had very productive offseasons.
Throughout the winter, there have been various reports and rumors about the organization evaluating the free agent and trade markets. Two interesting names that have emerged as potential additions are talented infielders Nico Hoerner and Brendan Donovan.
While neither is the big-name splash NY Yankees fans would like, the Chicago Cubs veteran is a strong middle infielder who brings speed and elite defense, while the St. Louis Cardinals utility man earned All-Star honors for his versatility and bat skills in 2025.
SF Giants ‘Aggressively’ Pursuing Brendan Donovan, Nico Hoerner Trade

Either would impact additions. However, one of them could soon be off the trade block. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, “The San Francisco Giants are aggressively pursuing a second baseman and have been engaged with Chicago on Nico Hoerner and St. Louis on Brendan Donovan.”
The Giants have been pretty quiet this offseason, so they may be motivated to make a meaningful move with spring training right around the corner.
Obviously, one of the two NL Central infielders would still be available if San Francisco made a trade. But it also means more teams competing with the NY Yankees for that remaining star.
