The Detroit Tigers want to contend with Tarik Skubal during the 2026 MLB season, but it might not be the best option. With Skubal poised to enter MLB Free Agency after the 2026 season, Detroit could benefit from maximizing his value. So, what is the latest on Skubal’s future in Detroit?

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Tigers continue to be engaged with other MLB teams in trade discussions for Skubal. As of now, it is unclear whether Detroit will move the two-time Cy Young award winner, but the package would likely be massive for a player with one year left on his contract.

Skubal is the best pitcher in MLB, so any trade would likely have to bring the Tigers a massive return. Detroit obviously wants to keep Skubal, but he could earn beyond $400 million if he has a healthy 2026 season. If Skubal left Detroit in free agency, it would severely hurt the organization’s rotation.

This makes a trade for Detroit, as the organization could bring long-term value in for a player that could leave after 2026. The best option would be to re-sign Skubal, but the organization hasn’t reached a deal yet. The Tigers are in a rough spot, but trading their ace could be the best move for the long-term future.
