It’s pretty safe to say that no one had an X spat between Barstool Sports founder and New York Mets owner Steve Cohen on their Wednesday in sports bingo card.

Boston native Portnoy has made a career from offering up bold opinions about any and all sports. He also often has nothing good to say about New York teams and is always willing to take shots at those franchises. However, this week, instead of going straight after a club from Gotham, he targeted one of their owners.

On Wednesday, Bloomberg released details on the highest-earning hedge fund managers for 2025. And at the top of the list was NY Mets boss Steve Cohen, who made another $3.4 billion last year. That news obviously bothered Portnoy, and he saw fit to offer some unexpected commentary on the news.

“I think I have a solution for [New York City Mayor Zohran] Mandani. Tax Wall Street people like Steve Cohen, who built their fortunes just on Wall Street, 90%. That’s not real work to begin with,” Portnoy wrote in a post on X.

Portnoy’s comment is related to Mamdani’s goal of cutting the city’s deficit by increasing taxes for some of the wealthiest New Yorkers

Surprisingly, Cohen — a frequent X user — happened to see the post and had a response. “I love that idea, what a genius,” the NY Mets boss wrote.

Of course, the co-host of FS1’s Wake Up Barstool was not going to go away quietly and decided to take a shot at something that still stings NY Mets fans, and that is losing homegrown star Pete Alonso in free agency to the Baltimore Orioles in the offseason.

“I’ll tell you this, Stevie. 1. I would out-trade you if I had your capital to start, and #2 if I had your money, this guy would 100% still be in a Mets uniform,” Portnoy wrote.

The man reportedly worth $23 billion has not yet responded to the follow-up from the Michigan fan and alum. Either way, no one expected a Portnoy and Cohen X beef to break out this week.
