Could pitcher Luis Severino return to the New York Mets before this year’s trade deadline? A new report sure makes it seem very possible.
The Mets have been linked to a boatload of trade rumors over the last few weeks. While improving the bullpen seems to be a top priority, there has been a lot of speculation that they will check in on the starters markets as well.

Team president David Stearns is very measured with the decisions he makes. One way to add a player that he would be comfortable with is to bring back someone he’s previously added to the team. Well, the door now seems open to acquiring an impact starter that’s a familiar face.
“I do think Sacramento, whatever we call this team, they are going to have to pay some of that [contract] down wherever they send [Luis Severino]. He’s been great on the road. Has not been good at home. Seeing Severino traded, I would not be shocked,” Heyman said on a Bleacher Report livestream this week.
- Luis Severino stats (2025): 2-8 record, 4.83 ERA, 1.351 WHIP, 68 strikeouts, 31 walks
After undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2020, it looked like the two-time All-Star might never return to the ace pitcher he once was. However, in his lone season with the Mets, their analytics team and pitching coach Jeremy Hefner were able to get a big bounce-back season out of the former Yankees star.
He has regressed for the Athletics after signing a three-year, $67 million contract with the club this offseason. However, as Heyman mentioned, their temporary stadium in Sacramento could be blamed for his 4.83 ERA. On the road, Severino has a 2.27 ERA. But it balloons to 6.79 for games at Sutter Health Park.
The Mets coaching staff already has a good relationship with the 31-year-old. And he has proven over his 10-year career that he can handle the New York spotlight. If the Athletics are willing to pay a portion of his deal, the Mets could get a player they know can make them better, and at a price they prefer.
Severino is owed $25 million next season and has a $22 million player option for 2027.
