The MLB trade deadline has finally arrived, and there’s been a flurry of activity leading up to the final hour. With the Chicago Cubs sitting in first place of the National League Central, they’ve been one of the most active teams in the past 48 hours.
According to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, the Cubs have agreed to a trade with the Minnesota Twins for one-time All-Star Willi Castro. The Cubs are sending a group of prospects to the Twins in exchange for the superutility infielder/outfielder.
According to Jesse Rogers, the Cubs are sending Double-A pitchers Ryan Gallagher and Sam Armstrong to the Twins. Gallagher is the Cubs’ eighth-ranked prospect per MLB.com.
The exact trade return has yet to be announced, but Castro’s inclusion is set in stone. He’ll arrive, ready to help the Cubs in any capacity, whether it’s as a middle infielder or by playing any position in the outfield. While Castro is capable of playing second or shortstop, he’s also spent time at third base.
Though the bulk of Castro’s work has come as a second baseman, at short, and in left field. Either way, the Cubs will be happy to add a switch-hitting player with so much defensive versatility. Still just 28 years old, Castro will enter free agency at the end of the season, which made him expendable in the eyes of the Twins as they look to continue cutting costs.
