Teams are busy making deals at a frenetic pace before today’s MLB trade deadline passes at 6 p.m. ET. That includes the Chicago Cubs, who have already traded for Mike Soroka, but indications are they’re not done in the Windy City.
According to MLB expert Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Cubs are still pursuing a trade for one-time All-Star pitcher Mackenzie Gore from the San Diego Padres. While the Cubs have already successfully negotiated a trade with the Washington Nationals, Heyman indicates that another deal for Gore is “not close.”
In fact, a trade for Gore may not even be completed at all, as he’s still under team control for two more seasons. That’s especially valuable for a small market team like the Nationals. In other words, it may take an offer that blows the Cubs awaay to land a left-handed pitcher like Gore.
Thus, the Cubs may need to turn elsewhere to acquire another frontline starter to help further their playoff push later this fall. Yet, with time ticking on MLB’s trade deadline day, the Cubs will have to act fast to help address their bullpen.
