A new rumor reveals more New York Mets locker room drama during last season, and offers another reason why fan-favorite Brandon Nimmo may have worn out his welcome in Queens.
On paper, the NY Mets had a team that could make another deep run in the playoffs last season. And the way they played over the first half of the season seemed to back up that belief. However, when the dog days of summer arrived last year, this team fell apart. Missing the postseason after an epic collapse in August and September.
Following the season, various reports emerged about issues in the NY Mets clubhouse and how the lack of unity in 2025 played a huge role in their disappointing season. One story claimed that political differences created a schism among the roster, and it specifically affected the relationship between Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo.
In the offseason, improving the team unity was a top priority of the front office. Many believe the issues between Nimmo and Lindor in 2025 played a key role in why the team’s longest tenured player was traded in November. Well, it seems the issues between the pair of Mets stars weren’t just about politics.
Nimmo and Lindor had issues in 2025 over NY Mets captaincy?
According to New York Post MLB reporter Joel Sherman, when the team was pondering the idea of naming a team captain last season, the expected choice was going to be Lindor. However, that allegedly bothered Nimmo after he spent 10 years with the club, and it created “tension” between them in the clubhouse.
Being captain of the NY Mets has been a top story in New York baseball this week after owner Steve Cohen surprisingly proclaimed he does not want to see a captain named in 2026 and beyond.
“As long as I’m owning the team, there will never be a team captain,” Cohen said. “That was my decision. My view is, the locker room is unique and let the locker room sort it out year-in, year-out.”
