A wild new report reveals the Boston Red Sox used artificial intelligence to interview a job candidate for multiple rounds before speaking to an actual person.
Calling the Red Sox with general manager Craig Breslow, president Sam Kennedy and manager Alex Cora a “sea of organizational dysfunction,” MLB reporter Joon Lee revealed to NBC Sports Boston that the baseball operations candidate went through five rounds of interviews — all with an AI bot.
“The Red Sox were trying to recruit a new person for their baseball operations department,” Lee explained. “During this interview process, the entire interview was conducted with an AI bot where you would record the answers to the questions and then the Red Sox would evaluate them. This wasn’t just one round, it wasn’t just two rounds, it was five rounds of interviews where this person did not talk to another person in the Red Sox organization.”
For @NBCSBoston: the Red Sox dysfunction isn't just internal. It's affecting how they hire.

Lee said this person also interviewed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and described his experience with Andrew Friedman, LA’s president of baseball operations, and Craig Breslow as night and day.
“The gap between the two organizations is miles and worlds apart,” Lee noted, adding that it’s “utterly delusional” the Red Sox would try to compare themselves to the Dodgers.
When asked by MLB.com’s Ian Browne about Lee’s report regarding the Red Sox using an AI bot to interview candidates, Breslow didn’t deny it.
“My understanding is there’s like an initial screening, and that’s used as a first filter, and then there’s human interactions and conversations in person,” Breslow said. “I’ve had a number of conversations in person and over zooms with people we’ve hired.”
When asked about a candidate allegedly having five separate interviews with an AI bot, Breslow said: “I think my short answer is, I’m not sure, because I know that I have had direct conversations with people. But like I said, if using this as kind of like a first filter, because the number of people who want to work with [the Red Sox] is so big, it makes sense. Now, I don’t think we can make hiring decisions without actually talking to someone.”

This report comes on the heels of the Red Sox trading three-time All-Star Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants following months of drama between the player and front office. Boston received pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison and prospects James Tibbs III and Jose Bello in return.
