The Toronto Blue Jays have made an excellent addition to their bullpen. It’s not the Edwin Diaz or Robert Suarez closer they were looking for, but in adding free agent submariner Tyler Rogers, the Jays have secured another unique look for their staff. Rogers, 35, had a 1.98 ERA last year for the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets with his submarine delivery.

It’s a three-year, $37 million deal for the 35-year-old right-hander, with includes a vesting option for a fourth season that could bring the total value to $48 million.

But what makes this signing so fascinating, is the insane contrast between Trey Yesavage, who throws the most over-the-top delivery in the game, and Rogers, who delivers the ball in the most extreme submarine style.

If the Jays bring Rogers out of the ‘pen to follow Yesavage in a game, batters will go from seeing an arm angle of 63 degrees, to one of minus-61 degrees—far and away the lowest in baseball.

Tyler Rogers posted a career-best 1.98 ERA in 2025

Rogers was traded to the Mets at the 2025 trade deadline. He had spent his entire seven-year big league career with the Giants up to that point. In all, he made an MLB-leading 81 appearances while posting a 1.98 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and a 203 ERA+.

Now, Rogers heads to the Rogers Centre to join an intriguing bullpen. The only question remaining, is will they somehow add another potential closer (Pete Fairbanks, perhaps?), or run it back with Jeff Hoffman? Blue Jays fans would certainly prefer the former.

The Rogers signing continues a blockbuster offseason for Toronto. They’ve also added top-flight starting pitcher Dylan Cease ($241M, 7 years) and breakout pitcher returning from Korea, Cody Ponce ($30M, 3 years). As well, they still seem to be the favorites to land top free agent Kyle Tucker. That, however, remains to be seen.
