The Baltimore Orioles have landed the best free-agent power hitter left on the market. The Orioles have signed free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso to a five-year, $155 million contract, pending a physical, as reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Alonso leaves the New York Mets after seven seasons.
The 31-year-old first baseman had a strong market, led by the Orioles, Mets, and Boston Red Sox. On Tuesday, Alonso met with Baltimore and Boston, as New York didn’t have much momentum. Now, the Orioles have a new first baseman through the 2030 season, as Alonso’s deal includes no opt-outs.
In 2025, Alonso hit 38 home runs and drove in 126 runs over 162 games. It marked the second straight season that Alonso played the entire schedule. The Orioles have been injury-prone over the last two seasons, so Alonso’s availability might be the best part about his game.
This is a shocking deal, but Baltimore was committed to landing a big-time position player. The Mets now have a massive hole at first base, while the Orioles have a surplus of infielders. The Orioles aren’t done yet, but landing Alonso is the most significant offseason addition in franchise history.
