The Arizona Diamondbacks have several needs this offseason, but the focus will be on their pitching staff. Arizona needs several upgrades in its bullpen after a rough 2025 season and will likely focus its attention on such. However, the Diamondbacks could also be looking at an upgrade for their starting lineup.
According to ArizonaSports’ John Gambadoro, the Diamondbacks are interested in a potential reunion with Paul Goldschmidt. From 2011 to 2018, Goldschmidt was Arizona’s first baseman and performed at a high level, earning six All-Star appearances and multiple NL MVP nominations.
While the 38-year-old’s prime is in the past, Arizona would be interested in using him as a platoon first baseman. Goldschmidt would be a right-handed platoon bat as the Diamondbacks have Pavin Smith as their most likely option for first base in 2026.
The Diamondbacks are looking to make some moves this winter, and signing Goldschmidt to the team would be popular. In 2025, the first baseman had 10 home runs and 45 runs batted in over 146 games. Goldschmidt’s production is dropping, but finishing out his career in Arizona would be fitting.
