The Diamondbacks, which shockingly signed starting pitcher Corbin Burnes last offseason, would likely have to move second baseman Ketel Marte to make it work. In fact, it is possible that Arizona and Boston would essentially trade Marte for Bregman at the end of the day.
The free-agent third baseman has been linked to several teams, such as the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers, but the market has not been moving quickly. Now, Arizona could help speed things up for Bregman, who wants a long-term deal this winter.

The Diamondbacks could end up being the best landing spot for Bregman. After losing in the 2023 World Series, Arizona needs to get back on track, and Bregman would provide excellent leadership in the clubhouse. This doesn’t even include his elite defense and above-average bat.
However, the 31-year-old third baseman’s ties to Arizona could play a big factor. Bregman lives in the Phoenix area, and signing with the Diamondbacks would be a homecoming, just like Burnes. The biggest question will be the contract. It is a reasonable concern for a player who is about to turn 32.
As stated above, Arizona would likely have to trade Marte, which seems to be a likely outcome. It would give the Diamondbacks more payroll flexibility to offer a higher AAV if the organization doesn’t want to commit to a long-term contract.
