With the end of the regular season getting closer, this week brings some big pitching matchups that could make a big difference down the stretch. We have young stars stepping up and veterans holding the line, so here are five pitching matchups you don’t want to miss.
Hunter Brown vs. Sandy Alcántara — Astros at Marlins
Houston’s Hunter Brown is having a breakout season. He has been one of the steadiest arms in the league, and the Astros are relying on him as they fight for a postseason berth. He will be facing Sandy Alcántara, Miami’s ace who hasn’t been as sharp this year but still boasts experience and durability. This could be a true pitchers’ duel if Alcántara gets back on track.
Max Fried vs. Patrick Corbin — Yankees at Rangers
The Yankees are looking to bounce back from a rough stretch and will hand the ball to Max Fried to try and stop the bleeding. He’s been solid all year and knows how to handle big moments. Logan Webb is one of the most reliable starters in the National League. He’ll face Pirates youngster Mike Burrows who’s been impressive but still learning the ropes. This is a great chance to see a veteran go against a young arm trying to make his mark. We might see the future for Pittsburgh and just how tough Webb still is.
Garrett Crochet vs. Ryan Bergert — Red Sox vs. Royals
Garrett Crochet is starting for the Red Sox against Royals rookie Ryan Bergert at Fenway. He’s been great all year and will look to keep it going against a guy making his 2nd start. This one is a clear contrast between a rising ace and a rookie trying to make his mark.
Shōta Imanaga vs. Nick Lodolo — Cubs vs. Reds
Both teams are in the Wild Card hunt and this series is a toss-up. One of the best pitching matchups is Shōta Imanaga for Chicago vs. Nick Lodolo for Cincinnati. Imanaga has been sharp all year with his control and smooth delivery and Lodolo has power and isn’t afraid to throw at hitters. Both teams need wins so this one is important.
