Mississippi State freshman right-hander Will Bednar dominated the second-seeded Texas Longhorns, striking out 15 over six innings of one-hit pitching as the No. 7 Bulldogs won their opener at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., on Sunday.
The Bulldogs (46-16) found all the offense they needed against Texas (47-16) with two runs in the fourth inning on a Scotty Dubrule sacrifice fly and a Brad Cumbest RBI triple.
Reliever Landon Sims allowed a ninth-inning home run to Texas’ Mike Antico but finished up by stranding runners at first and third, coaxing a groundout to end the game.
Sims struck out six in his three innings of work.
Longhorns starter Ty Madden worked seven innings, allowing only four hits and two runs while striking out 10.
On Tuesday, Mississippi State meets Virginia in the winner’s bracket while Texas and Tennessee match up in an elimination game.
