Minnesota head football coach P.J. Fleck agreed Wednesday to a new seven-year contract that will keep him on the Golden Gophers’ sideline through the 2028 season.

Terms of the agreement, which is pending approval by the university’s Board of Regents, were not disclosed.

“This is home,” Fleck said in a press release. “Our family loves it here and we are excited to continue this journey at the University of Minnesota. From day one, we talked about cultural sustainability and how important it is to building a successful football program and life program. Today is another step in that process, and this new contract is a commitment to our elite staff and the entire state of Minnesota.”

Fleck, 40, has compiled a 32-21 record since being hired at Minnesota in January 2017.

The Gophers (6-2, 4-1 Big Ten) are on a four-game winning streak and lead the conference’s West division entering Saturday’s home game against Illinois (3-6, 2-4).

“He continues to build a program that fans can take great pride in, and his student-athletes compete at a high level academically, athletically and socially,” athletic director Mark Coyle said. “He is a tremendous recruiter and has elevated the stature of our program by an immeasurable amount.”

Minnesota went 11-2 in 2019, its most wins since the 1904 season. The Gophers won bowl games after the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Fleck previously guided Western Michigan to a 30-22 record from 2013-16.
