Following a 12-year career in the majors that saw him win a World Series, All-Star Mike Napoli announced his retirement from baseball on Saturday.
The 37-year-old, who started the 2018 season with the Cleveland Indians Triple-A affiliate before he tore his ACL in April, will step away from the game after a memorable career.
Napoli’s career began with the Los Angeles Angels for five seasons, where he came up as a catcher and started to develop his roots as a productive power bat. He would then spend two years with the Texas Rangers followed by the Boston Red Sox.
Following an All-Star season in 2012, Napoli achieved his next big career accomplishment the following season when he won a World Series with the Boston Red Sox.
The veteran became a designated hitter later in his career and tried to reunite with manager Terry Francona in Cleveland for the 2018 season. Unfortunately, a torn ACL ended his career.
Napoli walks away from the game as a player with 267 home runs, 224 doubles and 1,125 hits in his career. Now he’ll hope to stay involved with baseball in a new role going forward.
