According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, former Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren was at the Oakland Raiders facility last week.
It remains to be seen exactly what this might mean, but the idea of general manager Reggie McKenzie bringing in someone he worked with in the past in Green Bay could make some sense. As Florio stated, Holmgren wouldn’t be inclined to replace McKenzie as the top decision maker in the front office. That could very well entice the general manager, as any other well-known head coaching candidate would likely want to replace him.
At 66 and out of the league (as a head coach) since 2008, Holmgren seems like an odd candidate for Raiders owner Mark Davis to go after. While the veteran head coach has had success in the past, his tenure in Seattle didn’t end too swimmingly. He has a career 161-111 record with one Super Bowl and three conference titles under his belt.
From a player personnel standpoint, Holmgren acted as the Cleveland Browns president from 2010 to 2012. That in and of itself should be reason enough for him to avoid taking on any front office duties from here on out. His last draft the Cleveland included the likes of Trent Richardson and Brandon Weeden in the first round.
He’s the type of coach that could potentially succeed with a young Raiders team. And to be honest, he doesn’t fall under that “retread” category that some coaches (Jon Gruden) who have been linked to the Raiders fall under.
