Newly signed Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Michael Johnson was recently released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers exactly one year after signing a five-year, $43.8 million contract with the team. His deal with Tampa Bay last March called for $18 million guaranteed, a total of $16 million of which Johnson was actually paid to play one year in Tampa.
In his only season with the Buccaneers, Johnson played in 14 games (13 starts), recording just four sacks and 15 quarterback pressures. Overall, Johnson graded out as the 53rd-best 4-3 defensive end (via Pro Football Focus, subscription required).
Somehow, Johnson’s agent was able to parlay this dreadful season into a four-year, $20 million contract with the very same team he chose the Buccaneers over last March. Johnson’s new deal calls for $6 million this upcoming season. That coupled with the $7 million Tampa Bay still owes Johnson from that $18 million guaranteed indicates that Johnson will earn $13 million in 2015.

So let’s get this straight for a second. Johnson earned elite-level money to record four sacks and finish as one of the worst defensive ends in the NFL last season. Yet, he was still able to turn that into a $13 million payday this upcoming season.
