Mexico midfielder Hirving “Chucky” Lozano will miss the remainder of the CONCACAF Gold Cup after hyperextending his neck.
The injury occurred in a 0-0 tie with Trinidad and Tobago in the first match of Group A at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday.
He was treated at a Dallas-area hospital and released to recuperate at the team hotel. Lozano, who will turn 26 later this month, will have follow-up neurological tests, and likely will be sidelined for four to six weeks.
The Mexico team said Sunday that a plastic surgeon also treated a wound to Lozano’s left eyebrow.

Lozano, who plays as a winger for Napoli in Italy’s Serie A, was shoved in the 11th minute while attacking the goal, and as he fell, his head contacted with the knee of Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Marvin Phillip. Lozano, who has 14 goals in 49 matches for Mexico, was carted off.
Play went on as Lozano was on the ground and Hector Herrera immediately rocketed a shot off the post before play was stopped for seven minutes to tend to the stricken player.
Mexico, the pre-tournament favorite, next will play Guatemala on Wednesday at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas.
