As the New York Mets and manager Mickey Callaway continue to make a mockery of themselves, there’s been suggestions that this whole thing needs to be blown up.
New York is coming off a four-game sweep at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies that culminated in the division rivals doing something they have not done in 90 years.
Thursday’s loss was a prime example of just how bad it’s been for New York. Closer Edwin Diaz entered the ninth inning with a two run lead. He couldn’t even get two outs before the Phillies plated five, including a walk-off three-run blast.
Despite this, it looks like the Mets are going to remain pretty inactive on the trade front ahead of the deadline in about a month.
Zack Wheeler, Todd Frazier and Jason Vargas are all free agents at the end of the season. That’s assuming New York declines the $8 million option on Vargas for the 2020 campaign.
None of these three would net a whole lot in return given their statuses as mere rental players. It also wouldn’t shake up the foundation of a Mets team that’s currently a season-high eight games under .500 and 11 games out of first place in the NL East.
Some figured newish Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen might want to break things up, potentially starting with Noah Syndergaard. That apparently doesn’t seem to be the case.
