The New York Mets lost 15-0 to the Washington Nationals on Sunday. In the blowout loss, the Mets created an ominous place in history for themselves.
New York starter Steven Matz had a great game, surrendering only one run. But after he left 1-0, the bullpen surrendered 14 runs. Such a game had never happened in the history of MLB. But, in what’s become a recurring theme for the Mets, he left trailing 1-0. What happened next has not happened to New York — or any other team — in MLB history.
Squandering great outings from the starters has become an unfortunate recurring theme for the Mets in 2018. But even with that in mind, they’d obviously never done anything like this.
Needless to say, 2018 will not be remembered fondly in Queens.
