Just hours after firing manager Mickey Callaway, New York Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen made it clear on Thursday that Callaway will likely be the only big name headed out the door this offseason.

When asked by reporters if All-Star pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Edwin Diaz would be a part of this team’s future, Van Wagenen let it be known that both will be with the club in 2020.

It might come as a surprise given the immense trade speculation that surrounded Syndergaard and Diaz leading up to the trade deadline. However, New York might hope that a new manager and coaching staff can help two of its top pitchers return to their All-Star form.

Syndergaard posted a 4.28 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 197.2 innings this season with New York. Meanwhile, Diaz crumbled as New York’s closer with a 5.59 ERA and 15 home runs allowed in 58 innings after being acquired last offseason.

Van Wagenen will almost certainly still get calls inquiring on the star pitchers. For now, it appears he will respond to those calls with rejection as he tries to use the upcoming offseason to help turn this club around.
