Mets’ 1B Dominic Smith placed on injured list

During a 2019 season that has seen very little go right for the New York Mets, they suffered another blow on Saturday and will now be without Dominic Smith indefinitely.

New York announced that Smith is headed to the 10-day injured list after being diagnosed with a stress reaction in his left foot.

Smith, primarily a first baseman coming up through the minors, has been used in the outfield recently by the Mets. While the 24-year-old has struggled defensively, he rewarded New York at the plate with a .278/.352/.506 slash line and 10 home runs in 176 at-bats.

While New York hasn’t provided a timetable for when he might return, the injury will likely further call into question whether or not he should have ever been playing in the outfield.
