The Memphis Tigers are coming off a hard-fought 37-24 win over Arkansas State to open their 2020 college football season last Saturday.
Unfortunately for the AAC team, it appears that any celebration stemming from the win will be short-lived.
Memphis football program suspends activities due to COVID-19 outbreak
“The Tigers have at least 20 people within the program who have tested positive for COVID-19 and are in a 10-day isolation period,” the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported on Friday. “The source also said that Memphis has “at least another 20″ people in quarantine due to contract tracing. Most of the players who either tested positive for COVID-19 or are in quarantine are on the defensive side of the ball.”
How did the outbreak start? According to sources close to the situation, it can be attributed to a party bus members of the Memphis football program were on after last week’s win over Arkansas State.
Though, some are disputing that notion while blaming the Tigers’ Week 1 opponent.
Interestingly enough, Arkansas State’s game against Kansas State slated for Saturday is still expected to go on as planned. We’re not 100% sure what that means.
These are the difficulties that come with attempting to play a college football season amid a still-growing pandemic. We’re going to see this repeated at times throughout the season.
As for Memphis, its next game against Houston slated for Sept. 18 is now up in the air.
