Miami Marlins right-hander Nic Enright announced he is fighting Hodgkin’s lymphoma and has already begun the first round of treatment, putting his baseball career on hold.
“I’m going to continue to tackle this challenge with the same perseverance that I do baseball – and I can’t wait to return to the mound and the game I love,” Enright said in an Instagram post. “I might have cancer, but cancer does not have me!”
The Marlins acquired Enright, 26, in the Rule 5 draft during the winter meetings in December after the former 20th-round draft pick played three seasons in the Cleveland Guardians’ system.
In 97 minor league appearances (one start), Enright is 9-8 with a 2.80 ERA in 141 2/3 innings. He reached Triple-A Columbus last season, going 4-0 with a 2.68 ERA in 29 appearances.
Enright’s news comes one month after Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendricks announced that he had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
