Magic Johnson to join Lakers front office as a consultant

One of the greatest players in Los Angeles Lakers history is apparently returning to the only city he called home during a Hall of Fame career.

According to multiple media reports, Magic Johnson will join the Lakers’ front office in a consultant role.

Johnson, 57, played for the Lakers from 1979-91 and returned for the 1996 season after retiring following an HIV diagnosis. He won five NBA titles, three NBA Finals MVP awards and three regular season MVP awards in what is considered one of the greatest careers in the history of the Association.

Since calling it quits over two decades ago, Johnson has been extremely successful off the court. Johnson runs Magic Johnson Enterprises, which boasts a net worth of $700 million. He also has a minority share in MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers.

It remains to be seen just how big of a role Johnson will play in the Lakers’ front office. It could be similar to Jerry West helping out from a player personnel standpoint with the Golden State Warriors. It could also be a bit less detailed.

What happens from here on out will definitely be interesting, especially considering Johnson coached the Lakers for a brief time back in 1994.
