Luis Severino expects to throw from mound next week

Luis Severino still has many steps to go before returning to the mound. Still, the New York Yankees ace is making significant progress.

On Tuesday, Severino noted that he expects to throw from the mound some time next week. That’s the first step towards his eventual return.

Severino has been sidelined all year with an injured shoulder. To that end, expect the Yankees to be cautious with him.

Given that we’re probably more than a month away, it’s hard to pinpoint a return date. If everything goes to plan and there are no setbacks, sometime around late-July or early-August is probably realistic.

New York has held up well with Severino sidelined. The Yankees sit at 44-27 and in first place in the American League East entering play on Tuesday.

Despite New York’s success in his absence, Severino’s return figures to be a huge boost. In 2018, he posted a 3.39 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 220 strikeouts in 191.1 innings.
