Those Los Angeles Lakers fans who bought LeBron James No. 23 jerseys will have to get in line again. It was reported earlier on Thursday that King James will give up that number to new teammate Anthony Davis.

James confirmed said report Thursday evening on Twitter, noting that he’ll go back to the No. 6 jersey that defined his four-year tenure with the Miami Heat.

Dating back to high school, those are the only four seasons that Mr. James has not donned the No. 23 jersey, which paid homage to GOAT Michael Jordan.

There’s a lot of conspiracy theories floating around NBA water coolers right now. James’ decision to part ways with No. 23 came in the same day that Davis forfeited his $4 million trade kicker to help the Lakers acquire another max-contract spot in free agency.

Social media was abuzz with pretty much the same joke.

As it is, James will be wearing a old/new number when his Lakers tip off for the 2019-20 season.
