Running back Lamar Miller has shared the Miami Dolphins backfield since entering the league three years ago, but in 2015, the 24-year-old is ready for his biggest role yet.
According to ESPN’s James Walker, Miller said he plans on being more vocal this season, especially if he’s on a roll during a game.
“I’m a team guy, so whatever the coaches call, I just try to do my assignment. But if I feel like we can run the ball this year, I’m just going to try and open up a little bit more.”
Miller must excel despite the Dolphins employing a currently lackluster offensive line that would free agent guard Evan Mathis would certainly improve.
Regardless, the 2015 campaign will show whether or not Miller truly deserves a new deal. While all signs point to yes, his rookie contract expires after the year.
Miller tallied a career-best 1,099 yards and eight touchdowns last season, adding 38 receptions for 275 yards and another score. He established himself as the clear No. 1 back, which officially made Daniel Thomas expendable this offseason even though Knowshon Moreno sustained a season-ending injury and isn’t healthy for 2015.
The 97th pick of the 2012 draft, Miller joins quarterback Ryan Tannehill and receivers DeVante Parker, Jarvis Landry and Kenny Stills to give the franchise its best collection of skill-position players in a decade.
