In a story that is almost too surreal to be believed, Los Angeles Lakers guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is currently serving a 25-day jail sentence in the Seal Beach Police Department Detention Center in Southern California.
That’s not the news here. KCP — playing with the Lakers on a one-year contract — is serving said sentence for violating the terms of his probation after he was stopped for an alleged DUI in Michigan back in March.
Despite this, Caldwell-Pope is being allowed to leave the jail to practice and play games with the Lakers.
“The 24-year-old is serving his sentence in the Seal Beach Police Department Detention Center and, under a work-release program, is being allowed to leave the facility for games and practices,” the Los Angeles Times noted Thursday.
Interestingly enough, KCP is not allowed to leave the state of California. This means he will miss upcoming road dates with the Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves. He is expected to make the trip Firday to Oakland for a game against the Warriors.
“It has been very disappointing to me as well, as far as my teammates, I feel like I let them down as well, my coaches, the organization,” Caldwell-Pope said about the situation. “I just have to deal with this legal situation that came with it.”
Caldwell-Pope, 24, signed a one-year, $17.8 million contract with the Lakers this past season. He’s averaging 14.2 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting at a 36 percent mark from distance on the season.
