The MLS Disciplinary Committee suspended Los Angeles Galaxy defender Derrick Williams an additional five games on Friday for his dangerous tackle last month against Portland Timbers midfielder Andy Polo.
Williams drew a straight red card in the 44th minute of a May 22 match after his sliding challenge flipped Polo head over heels. Portland won the match, 3-0.
Polo underwent season-ending surgery on May 26 to repair a ruptured left quadriceps and torn meniscus in his knee.
Williams, 28, served his mandatory one-game suspension for the red card on May 29.
Friday’s ruling means he will also miss the Galaxy’s games against the Seattle Sounders (June 19), Vancouver Whitecaps (June 23), San Jose Earthquakes (June 26), Sporting Kansas City (July 4) and FC Dallas (July 7).
Williams, who has one assist in four starts in his first MLS season, was also fined an undisclosed amount.
The Ireland native signed with the Galaxy in March after stints with Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Bristol City in England.
