Kyle Shanahan on Jimmy Garoppolo injury: ‘It was hard waking up today’

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a torn ACL on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. A day later, coach Kyle Shanahan bluntly said that it was hard waking up to this reality.

From a human perspective, it’s just unfortunate to see anyone get hurt, especially this early in the season. From a professional standpoint, the news is also grim for Shanahan.

The 49ers were on their way to a 1-2 start before Garoppolo’s injury. Even still, there was reason to be optimistic, especially about the offense. Being optimistic is much tougher now. San Francisco was 5-0 a season ago after Garoppolo became the starter. The 49ers were 1-10 before that happened.

So, we certainly understand Shanahan’s grim attitude.
