Kristaps Porzingis was involved in a bloody fight in his home nation of Latvia over the weekend, and there have been reports he might have broken his hand.
Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News shared a report from Latvian newspaper Latvijas Avize, which wrote that a “local gang” jumped Porzingis and others in his group. It also reported that one of the people in the group actually lost his pulse during the attack (and was later revived), and that Porzingis may have broken his hand during the incident.
However, Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday that a high-ranking Mavericks official told him that’s “not what he’s telling us.”
The entire incident was started by a group of Russians who were reportedly mad at Porzingis for being traded by the New York Knicks to Dallas, TMZ Sports shared on Sunday. Another report indicated Porzingis had been hit by objects during the fight, which explains how he ended up with a bloody cut over his eye.
The Mavericks are investigating the incident. Dallas traded for Porzingis last year, but has yet to see him on the court as he missed all of last season recovering from an ACL injury.
