The New York Knicks and owner James Dolan planned to cast a wide net in their search for a new general manager. Now, the Knicks have opted to retain general manager Scott Perry on a one-year deal.
The news, first reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania, was confirmed in a statement by the team on Wednesday.
“Scott is a well-respected basketball executive who I have known for more than 20 years, and I look forward to continuing to work closely with him as we look to build a winning team in New York,” team president Leon Rose said, via statement.
Perry became the Knicks general manager in 2017, just three months after he was hired to serve as the Sacramento Kings vice president of basketball operations. When the Knicks fired team president Steve Mills in February, Perry took on his responsibilities on an interim basis.
Shortly after firing Mills, New York named Rose as its new president of basketball operations. The former agent of LeBron James, it made the Knicks the latest NBA team to bring a top agent into the front office.
Philadelphia 76ers general manager Elton Brand was reportedly a candidate in New York, but the team opted to stay the course with Perry. Now with the front office in place, the Knicks can continue their search for a head coach with one serious candidate already emerging.
