Kirk Cousins prefers to remain with Redskins, open to signing elsewhere

Kirk Cousins Cleveland Browns

One of the biggest stories of the NFL offseason will be the future home of Washington Redskins quarterback and Pro Bowler Kirk Cousins.

Coming off yet another tremendous season, Cousins will likely hit free agency in March. The team has franchised him each of the past two years, something that would cost it $35 million to do again in 2018. Needless to say, how this Cousins situation plays out will impact the rest of the offseason.

But according to Cousins himself, he prefers to remain in D.C.

That’s not necessarily an earth-shattering statement from the veteran. It does, however, place the ball squarely in Washington’s court. If the team doesn’t offer Cousins what he views to be a fair-market contract, he will surely look at other options in free agency.

With the Denver Broncos, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals all among the teams looking for a franchise signal caller, the options are seemingly endless for Cousins. Pure conjecture here, but that could very well lead to a departure from D.C.

Simply put, Cousins’ next contract will make him the highest-paid player in the NFL. There’s a supply and demand aspect to this, and the demand is incredibly high here.

When asked if he feels disrespected by the Redskins, Cousins seemingly responded in the affirmative.

That’s been one of the biggest issues for Cousins and the Redskins. He’s continually noted that money won’t play the largest role in his decision-making process. He simply doesn’t feel wanted by Washington’s brass.

Cousins also confirmed that he could very well sign with another team this offseason.

It’s going to be a very interesting dynamic to look at once the offseason gets going. Not only will Cousins set the quarterback market, his decision will have a trickle-down effect around the league.
