One month after Karsten Warholm running 46.70 in the 400-meter hurdles at a Diamond League track meet setting a new world record in his native Norway, he has shattered his previous record running a 45.94 in the Olympic final taking home the gold medal.
By virtue of his performance, Warholm also set the new Olympic record breaking the previous record of 46.78 set by Kevin Young in the 1992 Summer Olympics.
Warholm also becomes the first Norwegian athlete to win a medal in the 400m hurdles in the Olympics. Warholm now has three of the five fastest times in the 400m hurdles history.
In addition to his previous world record one month earlier which is now the third fastest time ever, he has the fifth fastest time of 46.87 last year.
This was Warholm’s fourth time running under 47 seconds in the 400m hurdles as he ran a 46.92 in 2019. This makes him one of only two athletes to ever do so more than once in the event alongside silver medalist Rai Benjamin.
American Rai Benjamin took home the silver medal running what is now the second-fastest time in the event’s history of 46.17 while Brazilian Alison dos Santos won the bronze medal running a 46.72.
Alison dos Santos also makes history becoming the first Brazilian athlete to win an Olympic medal in the 400m hurdles.
