Josh McCown: Sam Darnold ‘the right guy’ to lead Jets into future

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold

Josh McCown is going to be battling rookie Sam Darnold for a starting job this summer, but clearly he’s not letting competitive juices get in the way of evaluating his young teammate.

The New York Jets will be holding a three-way quarterback competition between McCown, Darnold and Teddy Bridgewater during training camp. All three have a legitimate shot to start in 2018, but based on what McCown sees that won’t be the case for long.

Appearing on SiriusXM NFL Radio, McCown said, “With Sam (Darnold), we have the right guy, he’s wired the right way, he loves the game, he asks the right questions and he’s willing to work…That’s the foundation, you have to have that.”

We couldn’t agree more. On draft night, we made New York a big winner for having Darnold fall into its lap at No. 3 overall.

Since that time, Darnold has only continued to prove he’s a top prospect, and the Jets are absolutely smitten with him.

Whether he starts in 2018 or waits another year to jump into the deep end, Darnold appears to be the real deal and long-term answer at the quarterback position for a franchise that’s missed having that element for a long, long time.
