Michael Phelps is the butterfly king, but he was downed by Joseph Schooling at the Longhorn Invitational on Friday in the 100-meter butterfly.
Schooling, a University of Texas swimmer, edged Phelps with a time of 51.58 seconds, per the Associated Presss, while Phelps finished with a time of 51.65.
No doubt, these two will face off against one another in the 2016 Rio Olympics, with Schooling set to represent his home nation of Singapore. A veteran of the Southeast Asian Games, Schooling has won gold twice in the 100-meter butterfly (2011, 2015) and also won gold at the 2014 Asian Games.
Phelps owns the world record in this event. He swam it in 49.82 seconds at the 2009 World Championships but has slowed down slightly every year since. He did manage to win gold in the 100-meter freestyle Friday at the Longhorn Invitational.
It sure looks like Phelps will have his hands full in Rio later this year, but we know he is at his best when the stakes are the highest.
