Cleveland Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez will have X-rays on his shin and manager Terry Francona will undergo minor surgery and miss Friday night’s game.

The three-time All-Star Ramirez fouled a ball off his right shin in the eighth inning of Thursday’s loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Ramirez was pulled for a pinch-hitter after delivering an RBI single.

“He’s pretty sore,” Francona said. “Hit above his pad, just below his knee. For him to react like that, he’s a pretty tough kid. He’s going to get some X-rays, but he’s sore.”

Ramirez entered Thursday batting .281 with eight home runs and 33 RBIs.

Francona will miss Friday’s lid lifter against the visiting Detroit Tigers. Francona is having a minor surgical procedure but is expected to return to the dugout Saturday. Thursday was Francona’s first game back following a positive test for COVID-19.

Guardians bench coach DeMarlo Hale will serve as acting manager Friday night.
