Jerry Jones pining for Tony Romo, despite Dak Prescott’s impressive play

Tony Romo, Jerry Jones

Dak Prescott has shown himself a capable quarterback in his first two NFL games for the Dallas Cowboys. But according to Jerry Jones, that won’t do anything to slow the return of Tony Romo.

Jones even rebuffed a question asking if Prescott’s play would allow Cowboys to be more patient with Romo’s return.

“Not necessarily, not necessarily,” Jones said, per Jean-Jacques Taylor, ESPN. “Tony’s situation, when he’s back, will be about whether he’s functional. We’re a better team. We play better.”

The reality is that Dallas must be patient with Romo’s return. The play of Prescott shouldn’t actually influence that a whole lot.

Romo is 36 and has missed a lot of time due to injuries. Even if the Cowboys were getting poor quarterback play, they couldn’t rush Romo back. Doing so would put the remainder of Romo’s career in jeopardy and may even hamper him well beyond his football career.

Neither Romo or his team should be doing that. While Jones and his team might miss Romo in action, patience has to be the key with his return. There’s too much at stake for anything else.
