49ers owner Jed York speaks out against North Carolina LGBT law

Jed York

According to a report by Matt Maiocco of CSNbayarea.com, San Francisco CEO Jed York made a generous $75,000 donation to Equality NC, an organization that is seeking equal rights for LGBT laws.

York is in North Carolina attending the NFL owners meetings. Per the report, York also urged North Carolina’s governor to repeal the controversial law that was recently passed.

“The San Francisco 49ers are deeply concerned about North Carolina’s recently-enacted House Bill 2, which overturned protections for LGBT people and sanctioned discrimination across the state. HB 2 does not reflect the values of our organization, of our country, or the majority of North Carolinians.”

“Discrimination is wrong, and we believe it has no place in North Carolina or anywhere in our country. As an organization that prides ourselves on being inclusive and welcoming to all, we strongly urge Governor Pat McCrory and the leadership of North Carolina’s legislature to repeal this law in the current legislative session.”

The law that currently stands is HB 2, otherwise known as the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act or more simply stated, the Charlotte bathroom bill, per Maiocco.

Under the law, transgender people who have yet to undergo surgical procedures and take the legal action to change their documented gender cannot use public facilities for the gender which they associate themselves.

Needless to say, Equality NC was more than thankful for the donation and York’s comment.

Whether the law will be repealed remains to be seen. Though it is admirable of Jed York to help get the wheels turning by supporting Equality NC and issuing a statement to what is an extremely sensitive and controversial subject in today’s society.
